A Night at Cineworld Ely Opening Gala

My wife and I live near the City of Ely in Cambridgeshire. A lovely little city in the middle of the countryside with a cathedral that can be seen for miles in all directions, ducks that think they own the place at times and a more relaxed pace than places like Cambridge. But it did lack a modern full time cinema resulting in people having to travel to Cambridge, Bury st Edmunds or Huntingdon to go to the cinema.

My wife and I have been eagerly awaiting the opening of Cineworld Ely, saddened each time we heard news of delays in construction. I have lived in the Ely area for my entire life, other than when at university, and it was always the case of having to travel a nearly 50 mile round trip to our local Cineworld in Huntingdon! So it was great news to hear that the Cineworld would soon be opening in May.

On the 5th May, my wife and I both got a very interesting email. As local holders of the Cineworld Unlimited cards we was invited to the Cineworld Ely Gala! Well how could we refuse, getting to see the cinema and see a film at said cinema a whole two days before the official opening of the 12th May.

Since the cinema will be opening on the 12th May then I think you will love to also read my post on 5 ways to save money at the cinema.

Opening Gala

Does anyone else struggle with smart casual? I did as I have not much clue what to wear when something says that on the invitation. Anyway you don't want to know about my dress issues, the Opening Gala was so fun. Drinks and canapes were being served. We got to listen to the local choir, though best to appreciate the singing at a further distance as was a little loud standing too close.

We got to be shown some of the staff only areas by a couple lovely members of staff, who showed off their upstairs but also some of the new features that recent Cineworld cinemas are built with, such as removable seats and the disability booths upstairs, so that those with physical disabilities can have a different option on where to view a film. We also got to meet and talk to many of the people responsible for the project and from all over the cineworld team. From members of the local council, one of the new managers and even the guy that picks what films will be showing at our new Cineworld cinema!

Soon the members of staff at Cineworld Ely will most likely see my wife and I more than their own families!

Cineworld Ely

Cineworld Ely has 6 screens with nearly a 1000 seats. We got to have a look around screen 6 (which we are booked into see Alien Covenant on the 12th May in this screen), and got to watch the new King Arthur Legend of the Sword film in screen 1, with might I add some free sweets and popcorn!

Several of these screens have the option for those with physical disabilities to choose on if they want to be at the front or to take the lift upstairs to view a film from a booth behind the back row! This personally was really impressive and nice to me because my dad is disabled and struggles to walk short distances and up stairs. He also likes the back rows of the cinema. My dad and I will defiantly be at Cineworld Ely in July to watch Dunkirk.

Cineworld Unlimited Card

For anyone in the Ely area it is a brilliant idea to get an Unlimited card for £17.40 a month.

These are big savers if you often visit the cinema as you will only need to go twice a month for you to have saved money on buying a tickets. My wife and I also found that we ended up going to the cinema more due to having these cards as we wanted to get our money's worth.

The Cineworld Unlimited card gives you amazing discounts on snacks bought at the cinema, 10% off during the first year and 25% after the first year when you are ungraded for free to the Unlimited Premium (which is the same price so no worries there). This makes it a lot cheaper to have the cinema snack experience and also support the cinema, without paying too much.

The Unlimited card also gives you a 25% discount on food at Pizzahut, Frankie & Benny's and Chiquito, this makes it even better for a film and meal out.

A FREE month on your Cineworld Unlimited card

Want to get a month of Cineworld Unlimited for free? Enter either of these codes when you register and you will get a month for free:

  • RAF-24VB-07EJ-74CL-16LS
  • RAF-07GR-59RW-05PQ-69UW

You will receive your free month after your first initial 12 months, but with a cinema in Ely I am sure you will be loving your Cineworld Unlimited cards.
