Bubble & Squeak is an age old meal that is a must do for anyone that is thrifty and loves their food. It is quite simply a meal made of leftovers. These leftovers can be from leftover Sunday dinners but the best times for Bubble and Squeak is always going to be Christmas and Easter, since these are the times when too much is always made.

Bubble & Squeak The thrifty way to use leftovers

Bubble and Squeak has no set ingredients, but it is mainly made up of potatoes and cabbage, with any other left over vegetables or cold meats. Meat doesn't have to be added and as such makes it great for anyone that is vegetarian.

Interesting fact is that it was named due to the sounds it makes during cooking. So maybe you can get your children to have a little giggle whilst it is cooking.

The Bubble and Squeak I am going to show you was made using our own leftovers listed below. However you can make it using any and all leftovers, so don't be afraid.

  • Coconut Oil
  • Sweet potato mash
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Butternut
  • Carrots
  • Gammon
  • Chili (because we LOVE spicy)

First you should heat up a frying pan and use around a tablespoon of coconut oil or butter (if it is Christmas then duck or goose fat is brilliant to use as well).

Whilst the pan is heating up you can prepare your leftovers. You can leave them in chunky bites like I have done or you can chop them into smaller pieces. If you have any boiled potatoes left over then mash them up a little.

Once the pan and oil/butter/fat is nice and hot then add everything to the pan. Keep stirring to make sure that it is well mixed and doesn't stick.

It will be done in around 5-6 minutes. Now it will be down to personal taste on if you like it crispy or not. Though personally it is best very crispy.

Dish up and enjoy!

Bubble and Squeak doesn't just have to be eaten by itself. You can have it as a side with an English Breakfast, which is great one when you have guests.

How do you like your Bubble & Squeak? Crispy or not very crispy? On it's own or with an English breakfast?
