I can't believe that February is here – one of the
best most expensive months of the year because it is my wife's birthday. There is also Valentine's day…but we aren't too big on that one. It is the perfect time to go over the goals I set for January so that you can see how I did, and let you know my goals for February.
The goal: £100 household budget for January
Our household budget went just over £100 at £106.59, which I am pleased with! We usually budget up to £65 a week to cover everything from food, toiletries, cat stuff and even eating out. This means we have saved quite a bit on our usual spend. We ended up doing really well with using what we had in already in our nearly over-flowing freezers, two of the drawers were completely emptied! We then ended up filling those drawers back up again with our inability to resist the lure of the reduction labels and of course the discounted and free items on our apps like shopmium and checkoutsmart.
The goal: Declutter 500 items
This has been one of our most successful of all the challenges in January, but you wouldn't think it looking at some of the things we still have left. Boxes of items have been donated to a hostel, bags of food have been donated to food banks, clothes have been sorted out to sell and donate, and bin bags have been filled and thrown out, yet still it seems like stuff is everywhere in our home!
We took de-cluttering on room by room, the kitchen being one of the first rooms to tackle and the location of most of the items for the hostel. Every room has been de-cluttered even if only a little bit, like in our library room Emma went through her books and chose to sell some of her unwanted books to WeBuyBooks.com and in our living room the DVD collection has gotten smaller again since I haven't actually watched some of those DVDs in years and so sold some more to MusicMagpie, Zapper and Ziffit.
We have recorded and uploaded some of the rooms we have done onto Youtube on Emma's channel, since after all one of the things that can really motivate you to de-clutter can be watching someone else do it. Though Emma has also gone out to help fellow blogger Mrs Money Penny de-clutter at her house and done a collaborative vlog of the de-clutter and how it can make you money. Emma's can be found here and Mrs Money Penny's can be found here.
Re-selling has started to gain momentum with us and we have greater enthusiasm than we ever have before to re-sell, so there have been some items coming in. Thankfully though these mostly go into our selling room and have been listed at the earliest opportunity, usually the same or next day. We have began vlogging our re-selling hauls on Youtube for everyone that is interested.
This challenge will most likely be continued over the next several months but it has been a great success in my opinion this month with how much has gone. The stuff coming in doesn't count as it is for our little side hussle of re-selling, right?
Goal: improving our health
Our health improvements have also been going quite well. I managed to lose 4% of my body weight (just, I had lost 0.6lbs more than I needed to) which is a great kickstart for January! We both got ill which meant that the Pokemon walks didn't happen as frequently…and we made it to the gym ZERO times! Definitely room for improvement here.
Goal: house to home
Well the house is still standing so it has survived my DIY, but on a serious note we have done a lot to make this place feel more like a home. I have gotten around to hanging up canvas in the bedroom and living room, shelves and frames have gone up in both our offices and bedroom.
The de-clutter has helped out so much as well with making it feel a lot more like home to us, we can actually find items we are looking for without having to move a load of other items and relax on the sofa without seeing things we need to move or think “I need to get rid of that”.
We are also testing the waters with hiring a cleaner to help us out once a week in our kitchen, dining room and living room. So far it has been going really well, it has encouraged us to be generally more tidier, since after all she cleans not tidies. But most importantly it helps takes our minds off it a little bit so that we can focus on other jobs and work that needs to be done.
Goal: the blog
Well as you can see I have successfully been writing posts for my blog again, and it is a really great feeling to be doing it again. I have managed a post a week, though I haven't been trying so much in trying to get posts written ahead of schedule but maybe that will come in the future. This month has also been a first in that I have written a guest post for someone other than Emma.
You can read more about my January goals in this post here.
Goals for February 2017
As well as keeping up with the January goals, I want to focus on the following goals in February.
Emma and I have both been doing this on some level or another for quite a few years, and between us have quite a good knowledge on items that sell well on eBay. We have started to become more geared into reselling as one of our side hustles, focusing on it as a business. As such we have created a business eBay and PayPal account specifically for reselling, as well as spreadsheets to keep track of profits and expenses (also brilliant for when tax needs be done).
We have already started to record on Youtube our hauls for reselling and our journey into this community.
Developing my YouTube
Youtube a strange and mysterious place full of cat videos and vloggers. I am aiming to start creating content for my Youtube channel which will include many of the things that I write about, for example meal planning. I have had a Youtube channel in the past where I would play video games, but unfortunately I stopped focusing on that channel as much due to time issues with other responsibilities. I feel that I can now focus on a Youtube channel to go alongside my blog.
Make Emma's birthday awesome
My wife's birthday is in February and as such I want to make it as awesome as I possible can, doesn't help that last year she was in Florida for her birthday so very hard to beat. So what can I do to make my wife's birthday awesome but also remain frugal since she would kill me if I spent too much money…plenty of things when you start thinking of it.
